So sue me, I was never a Farrah girl.
When it came to heavenly TV ladies, my favorite angel was the smart, dark-haired one who always solved the crime and never messed up her part….and I'm not talking about her role.
Have you ever seen a better crime fighting hair? Jaclyn Smith could race around in a topless sports car and that 'do would fall perfectly into place.
Flash-forward: TV's Kelly Garrett from "Charlie's Angels" is 65-years-young and still the classiest act in town.
Smith in real life is an actress, fashion designer, wig-line maker, wife, mother, mogul and BFF to many including the late Fawcett…but more on that in a moment.
The soft-spoken Houston native goes into a full phone blush when you ask her about her beauty secrets.
"Oh honey," Smith purrs into the phone lines as she relaxes in her daughter's bedroom at her LA house. "All the clean living paid off. I never drank. I never did drugs. I never smoked. Even before it was popular, I was eating healthy and exercising."
She still provides this little disclaimer.
"Beauty is still about the inside," she says. "Yeah, let's keep ourselves in as good a shape as we can, but there is an even bigger secret ingredient. I look at my Mom who grew older gracefully and beautifully because of something you can't find in a lotion or potion.
"The best beauty secret is to have a phenomenal will to face each day," Smith says.
BEAUTY TIPS FROM THE MASTER
Beautiful and deep. Allow us a moment to digest.
It might be deemed rude, but when I ask Smith about a few lines staring back in the mirror, she doesn't ditch the question.
"To say that I never notice a change would be silly," she says. "I look back at my stacks of pictures from the '80s. But I don't fret about it too much.
"It's life and life moves along," she says. "I think what's interesting is what my mother said to me. She said, 'It's not the lines. It's not how your face is when you're older. The look in your eyes is also different. Your eyes say that you've lived and express what you've taken in.'"
FORGET OBSESSING
Smith follows a simple plan for gorgeous skin and hair.
"I don't believe in making it too complicated. You don't need 1,000 bottles in your cabinet. I'm a believer in retinol for skin care," she says. "That constantly rejuvenates for me and takes the dead skin cells off. It also plumps. My husband is a doctor and he taught me that peptides that also are so good for your skin."
Her gorgeous mane is the result of a little TLC and a few kitchen fixes.
"I sleep in deep conditioner once a month and wash it off in the morning," she says. "On the other days, I use daily conditioner and comb my wet hair through just with my fingers.
"I'll even go into the kitchen and put a little deep conditioning olive oil or regular mayo on my hair," she says.
BEAUTY MOGUL
Smith isn't just known for her natural beauty, but for her beauty lines including her wigs and hair volumnizers.
"What's great is that they're made up of human hair now. I love the volumnizers and all the actresses out there use them," she says.
"Let's say you don't feel like washing your hair one day and it's not quite as full because you've allowed the nourishing oils to work their magic.
"I love to experiment with different colors to add highlights. You don't need to go to a salon, but add a different colored hair piece that is designed to give you highlights or lowlights."
She says the key to a good hairpiece is simple.
"We color the root line darker, which looks natural," she says. "You should never just be one color. That looks like…a wig."
FASHION THAT DOESN'T BREAK THE BANK
Smith also has her Kmart lines including fashion that doesn't run up the Visa card.
"When I first started with Kmart, people said, 'How dare you? How can you mass market a great blouse for $19? Anyone can make a $200 blouse. The challenge of doing it much, much cheaper intrigued me," she says.
"Now, the economy dictates that you buy smarter," she says. "Many snob shoppers aren't snob shoppers anymore."
"Sometimes I'll have on a Kmart outfit and people will whisper, 'Is it…?' I'll nod and mouth a K and they'll say, 'No, no, no!'"
She says women over 45 can find classic work suits or silk blouses in her line. "We even did cashmere sweaters for Christmas – 100 percent cashmere for as low as $29.99."
LIFE…NOW
Smith says that with age comes losing friends and Farrah's death hit her hard.
"She never gave up. She was always positive down to the last moment. I really admired her courage, strength and humor," she says. "She was the girl next door and an incredible sex symbol."
Ask her for a favorite memory with her girlfriend and she says, "I have a wonderful last memory when she came to my house for dinner. I took her to acupuncture and she couldn't have been in better form. We had an amazing time. She brought over a homemade German chocolate cake. She was an incredible cook."
Smith treasures those memories at her LA home where she spends time with her husband, a pediatric heart surgeon, and grown kids.
In her free time, she loves to do home remodeling projects. "I'll always find a little spot to fix. I think I'm basically a frustrated interior designer!" she says.
