Shocked because you can't find "yourself" in the movies?

Do you see yourself onscreen? I don't mean as an actress. Although maybe if you were, we wouldn't be taking this test.

I mean well represented. Stories that relate to you. Are tailored to you and for you.

Do you even go to the movies?

Summer is the big movie time — although fall usually has the more serious and satisfying fare. But many in media — Geena Davis to name a leader — are campaigning for better visibility for positive female role models in film and television.

And many women are in denial. What about Thelma & Louise said my friend Abby when I mention the issue. Yeah (speaking of Geena Davis). Memorable, iconic even. And nearly 20 years ago now.

Another freind recommended The Kids Are All Right, starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore:"We just saw a film that was completely, richly satisfying; pitch-perfect in tone and balance of everything. The two leading ladies have never been better — pitch-perfect in tone and balance of everything."

And, it does meet the 3 key questions of the Bechtel test. Does Inception? Name 5 other summer movies that can answer these questions in the affirmative.

  • Are there two or more female characters with names?
  • Do they talk to each other?
  • If they talk to each other, do they talk about something other than a man?

Take the "Bechtel test" to see how you fare finding women like you in movies. Then tell me what you think.

I think they should make a "Golden Girls" movie. Betty White could be in it!
