Tina Turner at 72, looks sexy and stylish in a pinkie ring.

Sometimes, just the smallest thing can turn your mood around.

This season's easiest accessory is a pinkie ring. I guess you could call it sort of a mood ring — remember those?!

I still don't know if they were real or not, in that why did they change color? Body heat, I suppose.

This season, the pinkie ring is the hot accessory of choice. The pinkie ring has been spotted on a cadre of celebrities such as over-40 femmes Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Lopez, as well as sexy-at-72 Tina Turner (above) to add a little sizzle and style to any ensemble.

Heat and trendiness aside, though, adorning the little finger is actually historical:

  • President Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously wore a family signet ring on his pinkie.
  • And so, supposedly, did Billy the Kid.
  • At preacher Henry Ward Beecher's church, they took up a collection plate to free a slave named Pinky. Someone contributed a gold ring, so when she was freed, they gifted her with the ring.

Pinkie rings can be easily lost though, depending the taper of your little finger, so seriously consider how much money you want to spend on the trend. Here's a useful link for learning how to get a proper fit on a pinkie ring.

But, whether you feel like flashing a little family fealty, or sporting a chic way to show off your freedom, or you just feel like being hot and trendy, a pinkie ring is an easy way to have little fun with your accessories. It might even make you feel like blowing kisses. Isn't that lovely?

Nice to know a style too oft associated with mobsters is outgrowing that association. I will also now obsessively look at Billy the Kid's hands whenever I see a picture of him.

Usually I think pinkie rings are garish but I love the one Tina Turner is wearing in the picture above. It is classic and understated and stylish. Thanks Tina for showing me how to rock a pinkie ring!

I just think they look flashy and sleazy. If that's what you're going for, then great!
