Dressing in Drag for International Women’s Day

James Bond dons high heels to highlight some perpetual inequities

Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Judi Dench (M) are usually seen together in James Bond movies, but for the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, they've teamed up in another way: for a  PSA. (Hint: he's wearing a dress.)

Maybe because it is a drag (understatement), but for International Women's Day, Daniel Craig (whom I was just considering for the forthcoming Swoon List) has stepped up his game – into high heels!

The actor, who's made a splash as James Bond in recent years (and to think, I was just talking about James Bond's tuxedo), is standing up, in a dress, to highlight the disparities between men and women in the workplace. But, alas, it doesn't stop there.

Recognize the voice? That's Judi Dench, who plays M in the Bond series, narrating the public service announcement (<click on that to see the video) that outlines facts about: violence against woman, unequal pay rates, unequal business positions, harassment, education, and more.

On the one hand, we have Willow Smith (daughter of Will Smith & Jada Pickett-Smith) singing about being a "21st Century Girl ": "on a mission … with no restrictions, … I do what I like…I set no boundaries, the world don't own me…"

Well, we're not quite there yet. Another singer, Annie Lennox, articulates that here. But Willow is young and so is the century.

Everything is changing so fast in the technology world, and in the world because of technology, so it seems like things could start changing fast, and faster, on the gener disparity front as well.

After all, women are more than 50% of the population – and guess what? A whole lot of that percentage is Boomer women.

We can change the world in our lifetime. We can.

It's Women's History Month – let's make some history.

Thanks for this wonderful reminder of feminist solidarity and International Women's Day. We need to be ever mindful of how far we've come and how far we have to go. And great to see Daniel Graig going "out" for Women's Day!

I'm sure Mr. Craig looks great in a dress, but not as good as Ms. Dench does in pants! We have the women of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya who are at the forefront of massive change, not just for their gender, but for their countries and the world.

I believe it is happening. More and more. Women make up the majority of college graduates and med school grads. We've all been fighting for this for a long time. BTW, I'd love to see Daniel Craig in pretty much anything.

Somebody needs to write that man a "Tootsie" role! Nice piece, as usual!
