Sometimes, I'm so busy dishing out fashion advice, I tend to skip over the basics.
So when I started fielding fashion questions from my same-age friends, I realized that I needed to branch out beyond just telling you about new fashion trends.
Let's call this fashion question #1: Are gauchos still in style?
A lovely friend of mine — one who is always impeccably groomed and dressed — sent me a text the other day asking me this question. She said she had always like gauchos and wanted to know if she could still wear them.
As delicately as I could, I told her "no." Because gauchos are definitely not in style.
Now, I'm sure there's some funky 20-something fashion blogger out there wearing them and looking adorable. But for those of us 45+ gals who want to still look like we know what's going on, gauchos are one style we should skip.
There are several reason for this. First, they simply are not "in." Sure, every few years they try to creep back into the mainstream, but they have not taken hold.
Second, they are just not that flattering. Take a look at the pic: see how chunky gauchos make Gwyneth Paltrow look? Enough said...
Third, retro looks like gauchos are risky for women our age. Whenever we wear anything "old-that's-new-again" we run the risk of making people think we simply kept it from the first time around. We're all old enough to have gauchos from the '70s hiding in the back of our closet. Now, with some beautiful, classic pieces I think it's great to have — and wear them — still. Trendy fare like gauchos or harem pants? Pass them on to a secondhand store.
