Take my fashion advice: the bootcut jean may not be the trendiest jean in fashion now, but it's the most flattering over 40.

Of all the fashion advice you seek, the most requested info usually centers around jeans. Which ones are in fashion now? Which ones flatter? Can I still pull off certain styles?

When it comes to fashion tips for women over 40, certainly one size does not fit all. Some of you are slim enough to still pull off skinny jeans (and you need to be slim to wear them.)

Others of you require more of a flattery approach to jeans: something to hold and lift where needed and make your curves look their best.

That said, there is one style of jeans that are universally flattering: the bootcut jeans.

A bootcut jean has a slight flare – very slight – at the hem. This serves to let you easily wear it over (naturally) boots, hence the name.

But the slightly flared jean also serves a second purpose: to visually balance out your hips.

If you, like me, have real-girl curves, you probably have some curve to your hips. By adding a little flared hem via a bootcut jean you will restore visual balance to your silhouette.

Many of the jeans in fashion now are skinny jeans, which can look really cute if you are tall and slim. If you're not, then they are hard to pull off.

Some of the best brands to find a basic bootcut jean: at the higher end, Not Your Daughter's Jeans make a wonderful jean that holds in your tummy and lifts your butt.

At the more affordable end, labels like Wrangler offer a Booty Up jeans that has a slight bootcut, lots of great stretch and is really flattering, too.
