Harry Connick Jr. is just like anyone else. He asks The Question of his mate: "Honey do I look my age?"
"I ask my wife all the time, 'Do I look like I'm …fill in the blank.' I'll say, 'Baby, do I look like I'm 30?'
"She will say, 'No, Harry, you look your age!'" he says.
Connick in real life and in midlife is married to supermodel Jill Goodacre. In person, he's just like you want him to be: Funny, sweet, handsome…and absolutely delightful.
"So then like any wife, Jill will say, 'What about me?' I'll say, 'Oh, you look much younger than your age. You have better genes.'"
Did we mention he's also smart?
HARRY CONNICK JR. ON AGING
Connick soon stars in the new movie "Dolphin Tale" about a Flipper type whose tail was lost in a crab trap. "It's a beautiful story of defying terrible odds," he says.
He is busier than ever splitting his time between new CDs, stage, screen, and his family, which includes Georgia, 15, Sara, 13 and Charlotte 8.
The crooner dubbed Vice Chairman of the Board says he has noticed a few details about getting older.
"It's kinda funny when you start to get gray hair. I got a little white in my beard," Connick says. "Jill teases me about it.
"But I look at my Dad who is 85 years old," says Connick whose mother Anita, a judge, died of ovarian cancer when Harry was only 13.
"My Dad looks at me and says, 'Harry, you don't have anything to worry about yet. You look young to me!'" he says.
Connick says that getting older is no big deal.
"I don't really worry about it," he insists. "But I have been noticing the sign posts along the way that pop up. For starters, I have a 15-year-old daughter now," he says. "But that's okay.
"My thing is that the people who did their best at age 25 never reached their true peak which happens when you're older," he says. "If I was a pop star maybe I'd be worried about aging. I'd have concerns about my relevance.
"In my mind, I haven't even gotten good at what I do," Connick says. "The greats were just hitting their stride in their '40s and '50s."
Don't expect Connick to start wearing baggy pants and rapping.
"There is a pressure in the entertainment world to hang young. I don't have any interest in it," he says.
A MAN OF STYLE
"I've always liked style," says Connick. "In fact, all of my heroes growing up were stylish people. I loved Duke Ellington, Sinatra, Miles Davis and Louie Armstrong.
"These were all people who were born under a code of dress up," he jokes. "That's why I love wearing suits.
"I'm all about guys looking like they have a bit of class," he says. "Hey, our forefathers wore suits!"
Connick grew up in a formal way.
"I grew up in New Orleans on Bourbon Street," Connick says. "At age five, I already had a suit on. That was my uniform when I was performing as a little kid."
He says meeting his wife Jill was an image changer.
"When I met her, I was 22. I didn't even own a pair of jeans or a T-shirt," he marvels. "I didn't own them because I didn't feel comfortable in them."
Enter his wife.
"I met her when I was 22 and she got me some jeans and even sweatpants," he says. "Now, if I'm just hanging out that's how I dress. Jill got me to relax a little bit and says, 'Let your hair down and just be, Harry.'
"She told me, 'Harry, you don't have to be this dressed up guy all the time,'" he says. "So, she did get me to relax a little bit. It's not so much about dressing like a musician 100 percent of the time."
"I live in this fantasy acting world all the time, so it's important now to be very comfortable in real life," he says.
So at home, he's the relaxed Daddy-o. Ask him about his eldest dating and he won't even put on a tough Dad leather jacket.
"She's this age, which is crazy, crazy, crazy. But I think I'm cool with the boys. These are nice boys. Around them, I'm just one of the guys now," he jokes.
