So here I am at JFK airport on a Sunday afternoon. Craaaaazy Town!
Maybe it's the woman talking with the parrot on her shoulders while walking through the terminal (I kid you not) or the guy arguing with a vendor about a hotdog that costs $10.
The phone rings.
It's Jenna Elfman. Our former TV friend, Dharma! She's here to share Jenna Elfman's secrets to inner and outer beauty.
First, we have to mention that she's a movie star now with a key role in the Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis comedy "Friends with Benefits" opening Friday.
And before we get to Jenna Elfman's inner and outer beauty secrets, one question lurks: Can the woman who brought good karma as Dharma to the small screen soothe my midlifer soul on a frenzied afternoon when I want to run someone over with my wheelie bag?
Spend a little time with Jenna Elfman and you will find your inner Zen.
She has a keen way of putting life into perspective.
"You know, life at this age is fresh and new," Elfman says. "I don't care about the numbers. I feel very young because I'm constantly challenge myself – and not to avoid a wrinkle or two. I challenge myself to apply the knowledge that I've gained from all my experiences.
"And I keep myself challenged with the knowledge from new endeavors," she says.
ELFMAN'S INNER BEAUTY SECRETS
Elfman says that her biggest beauty secret is what's going on in your head and not what you slather on your face.
"I'm really on a thing right now. I'm trying to pull forward out of the back of my head all the things I've ever wanted to do in life.
"What's more beautiful than someone who is involved in life?" she poses. "And why do our great ideas and life wishes have to stay in the back of our heads?
"When you challenge yourself, life becomes super duper exciting," she says.
She poses: "What's your secret passion project? I'm sure that will make your eyes sparkle more than any makeup."
Hers is a live variety show in the vein of the classic, "The Carol Burnett Show."
"It's a huge challenge. A passion project," she says. "It has a long way to go, but it's thrilling to think about it and plan for it.
"I feel so inspired and creative," she says. "So what if it never happens. Or maybe it will happen in one year or five years. The fun is challenging yourself and putting your ideas out there…into the universe."
ELFMAN'S OUTER BEAUTY SECRETS
Of course, she's happy to also talk about how she keeps herself in great shape for all of her projects and for her family.
"I don't eat a lot of sugar. I don't drink at all. Maybe once a year," says Elfman. "I take my vitamins.
"I'm just really happy. My kids thrill me," she says. "To keep my body strong to run after them, I try to exercise when I can, but not always.
"Oh, and I don't drink soda," she says. "It's just not good for you.
"But most of all, I make a conscious decision to focus on what makes me happy instead of ten zillion reasons to be mad," she says.
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
It's funny that Elfman stars with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in this week's "Friends with Benefits." She is very happily married to hubby Bodhi and they're the proud parents of sons Story and Easton.
"I don't know anything about friends with benefits. I've been with my husband for 20 years. "Frankly, I'm more experienced at having relationships."
She says her real life love would make a good movie.
"He knew he was going to marry me the day he met me," she says with a laugh. "I wasn't quite as sure in that moment. I just really liked being next to him.
"To this day I get excited when he walks into the room. Even if that just lasts a moment before I'm annoyed again, we have that moment," she teases.
Now, her brood has expanded.
"Being a mother really made me value the kindness that people have in their hearts," she says.
"I see the decency in human beings around me," she says. "I also love just going outside, walking with my sons and playing with the dog. We have a great family life."
