Lesley Ann Warren and I are moving to another country: France.
We're not literally packing our bags. We're just moving mentally because it's an amazing way to deal with aging…while also eating a lot of croissants.
But I digress.
Lesley Ann Warren's natural beauty secrets include foreign travel when it comes to fashion.
"Since I was 48, I've had this image of myself moving into the next chapter of my life like a beautiful French woman," says Warren who is now 64 and stars on TV in "Desperate Housewives" and in the new movie "A Little Help."
"French women are very stylish at every age. When they become older, they're still quite alluring, but appropriately so," she says. "They're also not trying to be something that they're not."
Oooooh la la. I'm buying a scarf today.
Lesley laughs. "As I age, my sensibility is more European – classic, romantic and feminine without being girlish.
"Like Marion Cotillard's mother!"
A TRUE CLASSIC BEAUTY
Lesley Anne Warren is a lovely former dancer and screen and Broadway legend known for diverse work including TV's "Cinderella" (1965), "Victor/Victoria" (1982), and most recently the TV series "In Plain Sight." She plays Teri Hatcher's mother on "Desperate Housewives."
She says aging in Hollywood has been a bit tricky.
"I'm a human and I'm a girl, so sometimes it's really hard. Our culture is so obsessed with beauty. We are absolutely victimized by it at times," she says.
She says her 48th birthday was a turning point.
"I really started focusing on finding a way to embrace the next part of my life," she says. "So I started looking at women ahead of me to see how they were doing it.
"I found the biggest key is to look at yourself through kind and loving eyes," says Warren.
"I am so determined to feel beautiful and healthy at every age I encounter. That's a commitment I have made to myself."
She says the key isn't to focus on what has changed.
"One of the great things that happens when you get older is it's not about being appealing to others anymore. It's about being appealing to yourself," she says.
She laughs about how even her reading habits have changed.
"My favorite magazines used to be Vogue and Allure. Now, I love Oprah's O Magazine because it's about how you look and feel inside and what's best for our journey as human beings."
NATURAL BEAUTY SECRETS
Warren has been doing naturopathic medicine for many years. "I do Chinese medicine and acupuncture," she says. "I've also completely changed my relationship with food over the years.
"As a ballet dancer when I was young, I was anorexic," Warren admits. "I collapsed on the set and had all the ballet dancer issues associated with being very thin. I got very sick in my '20s and early '30s."
She says a naturopathic doctor started her on the right path.
"Now, I eat right and drink tons of water," she says. "I rarely drink and I don't smoke."
Lesley also watches her sugar intake.
"I do have a cookie every night as my treat, but it's made with honey, dates and natural components," she says.
"It's interesting that when I first started on this naturopathic path I was addicted to chocolate," she says. "Honestly, I could eat more chocolate than anyone I knew."
"What I found from this doctor was I was very deficient in certain vitamins," she says. "When we fixed that issue, my desire for chocolate lapsed."
"I think it's very important to focus on vitamins and supplements, too," she says.
Lesley also gets acupuncture once a week.
"It does everything for me," she says. "In Chinese medicine, the belief is that every organ has a yin and yang component.
"When anything is out of balance, it will show up as stagnation, which ultimately leads to disease," she says. "When you balance the chi component and yin and yang of certain organs, you are to the best of anyone's ability keeping all in balance."
She marvels, "I don't believe I've taken an antibiotic except for dental surgery in the last 28 years."
A BUSY LIFE
In her new movie, "A Little Help," Warren plays a very headstrong mother to "The Office" star Jenna Fischer.
"I'm unrelenting to her. She's such a tightly wound mother and an unhappy person. She takes it out on everyone around her which is delicious to play," Warren says.
"She's critical, withholding and judgmental. I loved it," she says.
Warren will also be back on "Desperate Housewives" this season as Teri Hatcher's mama.
"It's a special world and a great show," she says.
She says age – if you're very lucky – means following your passions.
"My love of acting never ends," she says. "It's my passion."
