For her 49th birthday, Michelle Obama trades in her signature bob (at right) for a sexy tousled hairdo with bangs.

The First Lady, Michelle Obama just celebrated her 49th birthday — and with bangs!

The FLOTUS twitter account tweeted a picture of the First Lady meeting with David Hall, one of the 8 citizen co-chairs on the inaugural weekend committee — and debuting her new hairdo (and a pretty great flocked frock too.)

Trading in her signature coiffed bob — well not entirely, basically just adding bangs to the bob, but with a decidedly more casual, sexier look and youthful vibe.

What is it about midlife and bangs? It seems like there's an unwritten rule that after a certain age, you have to get a haircut with bangs. And it often seems to happen on a birthday.

Because it makes you look younger? Because it hides forehead lines?

We could go on an on.

Maybe Michelle Obama just wanted a new hairdo for the inauguration — a new term, a new haircut, a fresh outlook. Haircuts are often the way women mark big changes in their lives; it somehow imparts an energetic approach to fresh starts.

Like all the different variations Michelle Obama has worn with her bob, I'm sure we can expect this haircut to be anything but static. Now we'll all learn just how many hairstyles you can do with bangs. (Of course, they could be clip-on bangs, or even a wig — hair extensions and additions are all the rage these days.) Even if so, we can expect them to be worked into the repertoire more often.
