It's good to be the Queen.
I'm on the phone with Hollywood royalty who is giving me her best beauty secrets.
"Honey, here's my motto," says Queen Latifah whose real name is Dana Owens. "A little mascara and gloss always brightens up the face!"
And what a gorgeous face. Queen Latifah also has a great way to naturally de-age your skin.
"When I was a little girl, my grandmother taught me to wash with some basic baking soda," says Queen Latifah who hails from New Jersey. "It's gentle and it has helped keep my skin smooth for many years."
ATTITUDE COUNTS
It's not just her ageless skin or her talent that defines Latifah, but also her great attitude.
I've been interview celebrities for decades and Queen Latifah remains one of the most genuine, unaffected stars in the business.
Her attitude makes her even more beautiful.
"I'm you. You're me. I'm accessible – as they say in Hollywood," says Queen Latifah who stars in the upcoming inspirational film "Joyful Noise" due out in 2012.
"Deep down, this means a lot to me. If you think I'm a kind person it's because I treat people like I want them to treat me.
"I don't judge. I don't alienate. I know I'm no better or no worse than anyone else," she says.
Cop an attitude? Not this Queen.
"My thing is I try not to complain about anything. I always go back to what my grandmother said about things," she says.
"On this topic, my grandmother said, 'Don't complain. No one wants to hear it anyways.'"
DIETING, ETC
Queen Latifah has done the Jenny Craig program, but she's not crazed about weight issues.
"For me it's about being healthy. I'm never going to apologize for not being a size two. Eating is a pleasure for me. I'm never gonna be one of those stick figure women. Definitely not, she says.
How can anyone adopt such a great body image?
"You got to be realistic and accept yourself for who you are. That's what I always try to do," she says.
She says Hollywood gave her some heat over the issue. "They have given me a little bit of grief. I remember when I was doing 'Living Single.' I was brought into a meeting and asked to lose some weight. I looked at the powers in charge and said one word: No.
"I told them, 'I look like normal people. I want to reflect a real woman out there.' I also told them that it sure wasn't the people who were writing in asking me to lose weight.
"The people like me just the way I am," she says.
Her philosophy of life can't be beat.
"It's about not sitting at home in front of the TV waiting for my life to begin," she says. "Get out there and take some chances."
She says her future includes adventure.
"I will definitely travel to cool places and I will be grateful to see each one.
"I live a happy life and don't really need to do anything too differently. I'm on the path of doing what I want to be doing which is the point.
"I only wish everyone I know could be on their own path. It would be a much happier world."
