It doesn't take a quantum leap to know that Scott Bakula will make you smile. "Did you just talk to Ray Romano? I'm here for damage control," he says, pulling up a chair in his dressing room.
The guys star on the series "Men of a Certain Age" debuting June 1 on TNT. Truth be told, they fight …like girls.
"Ray told you what? That he exfoliates?" says an amazed Bakula. "TMI, man!"
At age 56, Bakula says that his "beauty routines" are sometimes too much to print.
"I just eat right. I workout. I have a healthy, active sex life at home with my wife and I can honestly say my kids make me…dare I say it…happy," he says.
HEALTH SHAKE
Bakula says one of his favorite ways of staying healthy is a shake he makes each day. "Basically, you take Lactate milk, which is milk without any milk in it," he jokes. "I'll put in some protein powder and a handful of any fruit I want. I'll even throw in raw oats. I even put my vitamins in there and a pasteurized egg white if I'm working out.
"It's good, healthy stuff," he says. "You can try it in any form – with or without the extras. Just start with the Lactate and protein powder."
WHAT A FEELING
Bakula says that he does feel his age. "I find it takes me longer to recover. Our minds tell us we can do anything. My mind screams, 'Young man.'
"But the truth is you really need to warm up before exercising. You must stretch. Every time I don't do it, I pay the penalty," says the runner.
"It takes me longer to heal," he says. "An ankle twist. A shoulder that hurts. We get big signals to cool it just a bit as we age, but we ignore them."
MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE
He can't ignore fans that stop him in the street. Many of them are men who are overjoyed there is a show about their midlifer concerns.
"Guys say, 'Thanks for making a show about us,'" he says. "Women say, 'Thanks for making us understand our guys.'"
Bakula plays Terry Elliott, a guy in the midst of a life crisis who wants the fast cars and younger babes.
"It's a wild and wooly rollercoaster for him," he says of the new season. "I'm actually falling in love on the show, but something happens that sends me back into my old habits.
"Terry gets in some trouble and he must pay the price," Bakula says.
He says Terry "is a guy who refuses to grow up. He's the Peter Pan. Mostly, he wants to be loved by everyone and he loves everyone," Bakula says. "He's also content to have no actual ties."
"It's an immature way to look at life," he says. "But I think like many men of this age he has reached a point where he asks, 'What do I want the rest of my life to be?' Do I want to date 25-year-olds?
"He has some big issues," Bakula says.
A LADY'S MAN
Bakula is happily married to actress Chelsea Field and they have two children. He also has two kids from a previous relationship.
Above all, he knows that men of a certain age need to pamper their ladies.
"Lovely. That's the word most men should know," he says. "Any outfit my wife tries on, I say lovely.
"When my wife puts on two different shoes and says, 'Pick one,' then I'm at a loss.
"We're guys. You can't make it too hard on us."
