The shag has endured as one of the favorite short celebrity hairstyles because it is so versatile: just look how different the shag looks on Amy Carlson (left) and Micki Purcell, who each wear i differently.

One of the cutest short celebrity hair styles for women over 40 is the shag.

Although it's been around for 40+ years, the shag is still one of the most popular — and flattering — haircuts.

The shag is also really versatile: it can be long and piece-y or short and softer. You can wear bangs with your shag or part it on the side.

The best parts of the shag hair cut? Layers bring focus to your face and add volume and movement.

If you wear glasses, a soft shag is a flattering look according to stylist Patrick Melville of the eponymous New York salon.

The shag was cut for Jane Fonda's character in the movie "Klute" in 1971; it became an iconic hair cut and Jane Fonda still wears a flippy version of the shag haircut today.

Longer shags can even make your face look slimmer (and more youthful (according to Patrick Melville.) He suggested having the hair cut free-handed and chopped in to create texture and movement.
