There ain't no mountain high enough for world-class beauty Tia Carrere.
"Is it too windy?" she asks during our interview. "I wanted to talk to you while I hiked through some gorgeous mountains."
Forget about the idea that you can't walk and chew gum. She's hiking straight uphill a major mountain range in Honolulu on a hot summer day and talking about aging – of all things.
"I know that I'm not 20 anymore…thank God," Tia says. Breath. Breath. Breath. Huff. Huff. Huff. "I was a nincompoop at 20!
"I think part of getting a little older is acknowledging your age and celebrating it," she cries.
She even has a secret for treating her midlifer self well.
"The one thing I learned is you do need to be kind to yourself. I push it really hard when it comes to working out," she says. "Then I ask myself, 'What are you trying to prove?'
"None of us are invincible," she says. "I just found out the hard way that if you do too much and take on too much, it hurts more at this age."
"But that doesn't mean you should stop. Just be aware," she says.
TIA CARRERE FITNESS AND WEIGHT LOSS SECRETS
You know Tia from her music and as one of the stars of "Wayne's World." She was also a world-class model before hitting it big in acting on shows including "General Hospital."
The native of Honolulu, Hawaii says that nothing stops her. Not a mountain. Not a number on her birth certificate.
"I tend to do too much," she says of her daily physical activities. "I like to climb and then run the stairs in my building."
Of course, it makes for a to-die-for figure.
"The other day, I worked out and then took a tennis lesson," she says. "I pulled my back, which was actually a good lesson. Again, we're not 20 and you have to acknowledge that fact."
Tia's favorite way to stay slim and active is to walk and hike.
"It doesn't feel like working out when you walk trails that are green and lush. Beautiful scenery makes it a life experience and not drudgery. It's the best way to stay active," she insists.
Carrere lives part time in Hawaii and part time in Malibu. "I'm lucky to have mountains in my backyard," she says.
How does she motivate herself to take on mountains?
"I'm literally standing at the base of a mountain right now thinking, 'Should I attempt that one …or the one over there,'" she says with a giggle. "I usually go for the gigantic challenge and who cares if you don't make it.
"You have to challenge yourself at every age," she says. "Go out there and discover our own fitness challenge. I love to discover the earth. It grounds me.
"But you can get in the ocean, take a long walk on a beach or walk around a park," she advises. "Bike around your town. Put down the car keys and walk to your favorite store even if it takes you a half hour.
"Just move," she advises.
TIA CARRERE'S BEAUTY SECRETS
Tia, who also won a second Grammy this year for her Hawaiian music, says that her perfect skin is part a genetic gift.
"I was lucky that my parents gave me this good skin," she says. "Otherwise, I know that all women have skin challenges.
"First of all, I don't smoke. If there's one thing I could scream is don't smoke," she says. "I'm always drinking water and then I do the routine. I moisturize and exfoliate. It's really common sense stuff that keeps your skin nice.
"I think if you stay on top of your skin then you come out on top," she says. "As for the rest of it, I don't drink too much. Everything in moderation."
THE FUTURE
Carrere does live shows and sells her CDS on her website. She also has a role in an upcoming movie called "You May Not Kiss the Bride."
She's proud that her career has inspired other ethnic looking women.
"I can't tell you how many ethnic looking women and girls have told me, 'Thank you for looking like us and being on TV. You showed us that we can be beautiful, have adventures and not be the damsel in distress."
