Too Old for Tank Tops?

Heather Locklear deemed past her prime tank years

Four years ago, fashion expert Stacy London of "What Not to Wear" deemed Heather Locklear (who was 44 at the time) too old to wear tank tops. I was flabbergasted that a fashion expert of Stacy's caliber would say that someone in tip-top shape like Heather should avoid tank tops.

So I did a little digging, and found out that the derogatory comment hasn't slowed down Heather's tank-top wearing ways in the least. I found a few years' worth of photos of the lovely blonde midlifer wearing arm-baring tanks, spaghetti strap tops and halters.

The gist of Stacy London's original comment about Heather Locklear wearing tank tops was that sometimes older actresses try to recapture their youth by showing too much skin.

Obviously, this comment was made before the stunning 60-something Helen Mirren showed off an incredible body in her skimpy red bikini. That iconic photo changed the way most of us think about bare skin and aging: that it's not the age, but the body that should dictate what you wear (which means Helen Mirren can carry off anything!)

I'm not an actress – and I don't have anything close to the body of Helen or Heather – but sometimes I show skin. It's never to recapture my youth, but because, say, it's 104 out and I want to wear a tank top. Or because – even in middle age – sometimes I'd like to dress sexy.

While I don't think tank tops should have an expiration date, the whole braless thing after a certain age does needs to be a consideration. Of course, now there are so many gadgets – like a little plastic disc  that holds your bra straps back so they don't hang out of sleeveless tops – to help you look pulled together while wearing a bra that it all becomes easier to wear.

And retailers like Lands' End even sell modest tank tops that easily allow you to wear a regular bra, making them accessible to regular gals like us.

So girls, let's wear our tank tops with pride, regardless of what some fashion experts think.

The photo proves Stacey right. The armpits are too low and her boobs droopy - need a better bra. Careless looking.

You look as good as you feel at any age. I have seen some 20 or 30 year olds that should not be in a tank top with all of that wiggle. If you are fit go for it.

I'm 60 and wear them all the time—-i have great arms & am quite toned...women who criticize other women tend to shift their perception once they get closer to whatever it was they are criticizing—had an editor like this—she would not accept any of my 'designer kid' stories (back in the early 90's) simply because she didn't have kids—-she has them now-guess what-lots of designer kids' stories-from fashion to tony schools....they change in time. marla miller, www.marlamiller.com

A guy's take on this... Women are too hard on themselves and their bodies. We think you are sexy, and sometimes sexy is more about attitude than how you look. If you think you look hot in a tank top, wear it! Heather can wear a tank top anytime she wants to in my opinion.

Stacy London and her little pal are pathetic conformist bores.

Stacy puts Heather Locklear in the shade, Anonymous. I don't think there's a hard-and-fast rule about being too old to wear tanks — instead, the decision requires a periodic unflinching appraisal of one's body. I do think Stacy's right — Heather was too old for tanks, at least the ones she's been photographed in, to look good. (I'm just five years younger than Heather, BTW, and when the wrinkles and age spots set in — I've been a religious user of sunblock, so things are OK for now — I'll be covering the girls more thoroughly.)

About the braless issue and age: I'm 62, I didn't even wear a bra until I was 30! I was small and firm in the top area and never thought a thing of it and nither did my peers. We're the ones who "burned our bras" in the 60's. Most of us don't think there is Anything that has a date, just good sense should dictate what you wear but in the end: It doesn't really matter. NO ONE can say that someone is "too old". You 20 and 30 year old are going to feel exactly the same way, believe me. You age but you don't really change all that much and no one is going to tell us how to dress! What, it wrecks your view of the world? It isn't about YOU, it's a world for everyone, dispite what you see on TV (which is Fake, by the way). Grow up, get over it, get over yourself and embrace other people's differences as you would want them to embrace yours!

That's all well and good, and I agree!

Just don't get miffed when men don't flirt with you even if you feel sexy with your saggy arms and breasts falling through your shirt ;)
