Neon colors are everywhere right now, from the red carpet to Old Navy. There are eye-popping oranges, neon pinks and glaring yellows.
But are you too old to wear neon colors?
Well, yes. And no.
Neons are just colors that we all love like pink, yellow, orange and blue, but turned up to the highest volume possible: neons are the brightest bright a hue can go.
And for that reason, neons can be trickier to wear after 40 because the intensity of the brightness can be harsh on mature skin. Whereas a mid-range pink can bring out a rosy glow on a woman of any age, a neon pink accentuates the lack of color in a woman's skin.
That said, not all neons are created equally. Electric blue, for example, is almost universally flattering. It looks great on most skintones and if you want to go bright, that's the way to do it.
Neon pops of color – like on your fingernails (try something like Essie's electric pink - or feet (even UGGs are now available in neon brights)– are another fun way to add in this latest trend without going overboard.
If you do decide to take the neon plunge, keep your shapes classic: opt for super brights in classic silhouettes like trench coats, cardigans and ballet flats to balance out the intense color.
