Too Old to Wear Overalls?

Designers try to bring back farmer chic

There are very, very few things that I will tell you with absolute certainty you are too old to wear. Overalls are one of them.

I'm not sure where my intense hatred of overalls originates from, but suffice it to say that I really, truly can't stand seeing a grown woman in overalls. Especially anyone over 40.

Of course there's a big if. If you are gardening or farming or some other sort of dirty work, then overalls are more than perfectly acceptable

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way women starting thinking overalls made them look all earthy-cute or something. I very unscientifically date the problem back to Demi Moore in "Ghost" when she wore overalls for pottery making.

So let's review: Overalls for workwear = ok.  Overalls as fashion=not ok. And remember, that even if you're wearing overalls while plowing a field, it's still never cool to go total farmgirl with pigtails (which are another look you are too old to wear.)

Why am I obsessing over overalls now? Well, it seems some designers want to bring them back as casual wear, and it could lead to some shopping confusion for midlifers.

Ralph Lauren, who is known for co-opting uniquely American looks like prairie chic and country club style, said in the program notes for his fashion show, "I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies living authentically through challenging times."

Well, I'm all for meeting challenges head on and I do admire the pioneer spirit. But I definitely wouldn't suggest you don a bonnet or start hunting for squirrels to grill over an open campfire.  So while "living authentically"  is an admirable goal, overalls are still a fashion don't. So, to answer the burning question: Yes, you are too old to wear overalls. Even if Ralph Lauren makes them.

I don't know why there is such hatred for overalls, they can look amazing on a woman, particularly since the new styles are form fitting and nice material. I think the back of them does a lot to accentuate the curves of a beautiful woman and the bib on front ends just perfectly to accentuate the breast. They also serve to add to layering which is a rage right now. So, in review, they accentuate the body, and are great for layering - both major a major focus of style now, so my question is, why the hate? I think it's because overalls were what people's parents dressed them in as a kid and are therefore associated with childhood, and people can't get past that and view them as a separate, fashionable article of clothing.

well, I'm also 61, male professor, who loves overalls for myself but I have also a lot of female friends, same age or younger, who love overalls, in many ways, and for many occasions, overalls make you free and happy, goes across age and gender, and if you wear them with pride, you can look really nice and strong, no matter how young or old you are ! welcome to check my blog, bibprofessor.wordpress.com

Overalls are fabulous and if you love and enjoy them, please wear them - regardless of your age. Life is way too short not to be unabashedly yourself and to follow ridiculous and meaningless fashion dictates

Totally agree with not wearing overalls. Never did and never will. I think they only look cute on a crawling baby or toddlers.

I agree with your opinion about the overalls. They belong on a farm. I also think women over 30 should stay out of the junior department. Once you reach a certain age it just looks like you're trying way too hard to look young. EllenClaire, you should take pride in your body instead of covering it up in overalls. Fashion isn't about parading around trying to catch a man. It's about feeling good about what the good Lord gave you.

I am 61. First, I wondered about this site being ages 45 to 65. Gee, am I kicked out after 65. As far as fashion goes, I have seen those models (my goodness, bones walking down the runway) and the clothing they are wearing — no one I know would wear, at any age. As far as overalls are concerned, well, I had them in my closet, was wearing them awhile back and just discovered them again. I love all the pockets and the loose fit. My body does not need to be paraded around anymore — as I am not out to catch a man anymore. I had my children; they are 40 something now. I will wear my overalls anywhere I want to wear them and as far as the fashion experts are concerned — they are only concerned about the starved skinny models and pretty women — as far as the rest of us are concerned, these writers and fashion designers, etc. could care less about us not so beautiful women (at least in their eyes). I do not care about what others think about me — as long as I am clean, body and clothing — why do you care what I wear?????
