Are we paying for our fashion sins?

Pilgrim shoes? Prim, buttoned-up dresses? Black and white color schemes?

Fashion designers are taking a turn for the chaste.

At Marc Jacobs, pilgrim shoes were chunky and came in funky metallic colors like pink which suggested a split-personality vibe: part proper, part disco. Marc liked his pilgrim shoes so much he even wore  a pair himself for his final bow.

Even in shows where the Puritan aspect wasn't directly referenced there was an extreme modesty, a certain severity like in Calvin Klein's high-necked, unadorned black coats and dresses.

And actresses like Amanda Peet are already donning dresses that look more appropriate for a town flogging than the red carpet.

Hey, I'm all for modesty at this age, but the last person I want to dress like is Hester Prynne.
