WHAT DO I KNOW NOW THAT I DIDN'T KNOW IN MY 20s and 30's?
DONALD SUTHERLAND, star of "The Hunger Games" and screen legend
"I know about the power of friendships. When Christopher Plummer won the Oscar this year, I think I was happier about it than anyone on the planet.
"Let me tell you a story. In 1968 when 'The Dirty Dozen' was about to come out, an agent called me and said, 'Listen, you're really good in this picture. There is a chance for you to have a career in California if you come over.' "I was living in London at the time and said, 'I don't have the money for a ticket,'" Donald Sutherland says.
"My wife said, 'Why don't you call your friend Christopher Plummer for advice.' "I have a feeling that I woke him up. But I explained the situation to him and he said, 'Write this down.'
"He gave me an address in London and then told me, 'That's my lawyer's office. The money will be there in the morning.'
"He made my life. What he did was better than amazing ...it was really something.
"I know the power of great friendships. I also know that life is too short."
