WHAT DO YOU KNOW NOW THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW IN YOUR 20s and 30s?
LAURA DERN, actress and star of HBO's "Enlightened"
"What I know now that I didn't know at 20 is this: I was far too patient then and need to be impatient now. I mean impatient in very positive ways. This is the moment we're given. That's why I will cancel everything to read with my daughter in front of the fire. I don't care if I'm not going to be disliked, but I will talk about injustice in the world – and now I won't be patient. I will go out there and do something about it.
"What I know now is that part of compassion is to be fierce in your determination to create change.
At 20, I could have used more of my character Amy from 'Enlightened' in me. I didn't need the reactive part of her, but I could have used her earnest determination to help create change.
"Oh, and there's one more thing. I hope you ask me when I'm 60 what I didn't know when I was in my 40s and 50s. I'm sure I will say I realize I knew nothing then because I feel like I'm just scratching the surface."
