Forty-something Ricki Lake wears a newsboy cap on the red carpet. Does it work?

There are lots of places a newsboy cap looks fabulous. The red carpet is not one of them.

At a recent red carpet event, Ricki Lake, 44, added the fashion cap to her little black dress. She completed the look with bare legs and pumps.

As much as I love effortless chic — especially the offhanded way a casual element adds a youthful touch to something dressy — this look didn't work for Ricki.

I think there are two main reasons that her outfit fell flat:

1) A newsboy cap adds a jaunty touch to your look: it's youthful and boyish. This type of hat looks great with a turtleneck and jeans or a classic white shirt. With a LBD it just looks out of place.

2) Too much black. Ricki's hat, hair and dress are all black .It's just too much of a good thing.

I'm starting to see more and more newsboys on women over 40 (Yoko Ono donned a white one with a black pantsuit recently and it looked much worse than this.)

At best, it's a trend that can add some fun to casual looks. At it's worse, we may be seeing it pop up with everything (just remember how annoying and ubiquitous the fedora was a few seasons ago.)

What do you think?

I actually think the hat looks cute. But, regardless, RIcki is the kind of person where as soon as you see her smile, for some reason it pulls you in and makes you smile right back, no matter what she's wearing.
