I love it when just one piece can transform your entire look.
This season, that one piece is the fur vest, a look that works beautifully for our age group. During Fashion Week, I saw just about every variation of this look, from real fur to some great faux options.
Not only is this trend ageless, it can be found at just about every price point, with retailers from high end to discounters offering styles.
Here's how to wear the fur vest:
- Wear it now over a short-sleeve top for warmer days; layer over long sleeves for cooler weather. For a casual look, try over a T-shirt; layer over a turtleneck for a classic look. The faux fur vest can even work over a long-sleeve, button-up white shirt.
- Wear it with slimmer bottoms to offset the chunkiness of the fur. I like a fur vest over a top and bottom the same color for the sleekest look (for example, a silver vest over a black top and black pants.)
- Wear it tonally. Try a charcoal gray long-sleeve tunic with a silver faux fur vest. Try to keep the tones in the same color family for a sophisticated look.
- A hip-length fur vest is the easiest length for most women to pull off.
- Belt it. With the longer vests, it looks really fresh to put on a slim belt at the waist.
- One piece of fur is enough. Don't get carried away and add fur boots and hat unless you are on the ski slopes.
- Don't spend a fortune on it. I picked up an inexpensive faux fur vest for under $50, and there are many varieties out there for less than $100. QVC has a great affordable line by Rachel Zoe, one of the fashionistas behind the resurgence in popularity of the fur vest.
- Think about refashioning a vintage fur coat into a vest. A furrier (available in most major cities) can rework a coat into a vest.
