Florals can be gorgeous on middle-aged women. Especially painterly florals (like soft watercolors) or even bold, hothouse florals.
Wallpaper, bedspread, curtain florals? Not so much.
But that's exactly what Valentino showed during a recent couture show, which was — not unsurprisingly — called things like "modern glamour" (Vogue) and charming (Telegraph.)
Don't drag your toile capri pants out of the back of your closet just yet: curtain chic is not back in full force.
Whenever I see something as baffling as this Marie Antoinette-inspired fashion, I like to turn to a voice of reason: Cathy Horyn of The New York Times (have I ever told you I stalked her after one fashion show to meet her and she was gracious and lovely?) — who said in her column she thought the show looked "precious" and it got on her nerves.
However, not all of the new florals are bad. There was a recent appearance by the always stylish Michelle Williams in a floral sheath that managed to look ageless and timeless.
