New York City style gets a lot of attention, especially during the holidays -- Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, Rockefeller Center's Christmas Tree and ice-skating rink, lavishly decorated shop windows and New Years Eve's Swarovski Crystal Ball drop in Times Square. It is a sparkling city of romance, ambition and lore. We combed through author Jeryl Brunner's My City, My New York for celebrity style tips from midlifers.
Author and food celebrator Ruth Reichl (Comfort Me with Apples) at a tower lighting ceremony for the Food Bank of NYC at the Empire State Building. In My City, My New York, she indulges in food as memory: "Then you get into Little Italy and it’s fresh ricotta, other great cheeses, and olive oil. And you go over to Russ & Daughters. My grandmother went there at the turn of the century. When I go, I think about her telling me about how her mother would visit and she’d be wearing long, long gloves. And she would take off her gloves and stick her hands down into the pickle barrel. And then I go to Yonah Schimmel and they’ve got a 150-year-old yogurt culture. ...I love that it tastes of history."
