In fashion, nothing elicits gasps of admiration from followers like a designer who dares to play with concepts like proportion and volume. On the pump-it-up end, designers like Thom Browne (pictured, top) experiment with extreme volume; on the sleeker-is-better side, designers like Phoebe Philo at Celine set the standard of how streamlined a modern woman wants to dress.
Anthony Prozzi, Ford designer, points to the designs of Thom Browne, who introduces the "concept of clothing as protector, reproportioned to act as a shield." He says the new Ford Explorer "talks to the same sensibilities" about line and overall proportion.
On the flip side, Anthony says vehicle design is influenced by how people are moving back into urban areas. And cars like the Ford Fiesta (which Anthony says is the No. 1 selling car in the world) answers that need for a smaller footprint.
Look for: Vehicles at both end of the spectrum like Ford Fiesta (sleeker, smaller footprint) and Ford Explorer (larger, more volume.)
