Mr. Mutton Chops

Whoa, who is this guy? Identified simply as "A City Gent" from 1885, his opulent Mutton Chops were very fashionable in the mid to late 1800s. In fact, it was around this time when the infamous facial hair finally acquired its name. The moniker is attributed to Civil War General Ambrose Burnside, whose copious facial hair fanned out like a tutu before swooping into mustache formation; this style is also known as Friendly Mutton Chops (presumably because they meet in the middle). Thus, the term 'sideburn' was born.
