Who Wore It Best? Midlifers or Youngsters?

There were a lot of trends on view at the 69th annual Golden Globe awards show -- did age and experience trump youth and boldness on the red carpet?

Golden Globes: Wide Receivers

Panniers and bustles and hoop skirts, oh my. Historical reference makes me happy, but the two June birthday girls' — Meryl Streep, 62 (winner for her Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady) and Natalie Portman, 30 (last year's winner for Black Swan) — mixed styles make more of a hodgepodge than hybrid. Whereas Andrea Riseborough, 30 (Wallis Simpson in Madonna's W.E.) turned to designer Vivienne Westwood who's been doing successful century melds for decades — youngster win!

Recent Vogue covergirl Meryl Streep won the day in gracious speeches however — despite a failed attempt to get her glasses to her, she extemporized with sublime sincerity on her fellow actresses, that the number of great women's roles in one year was a glowing win in-and-of itself, and that you really can't compare performances. Agree! Which is why I prefer to talk dresses rather that pit performances against each other — a dress you can take off....
