It took a few months, but the answer to a column I posted: “Should Models Look Like You?” is a resounding Yes. A Cambridge dissertation surveyed over 3,000 women to confirm what may be obvious to you & me; here a few over-50 models which bear out the results, with a few weighing in on the topic.
Now in her 50s, Helen Powers has had a lucrative career as a fit model for 33 years. And she's glad someone chose to finally, officially, substantiate what she's always known. One of her most successful gigs, she says, was a spread for More magazine, where she wasn't airbrushed at all: "My lips were uneven, and the crows feet were showing... I'm proud of the way I look. But I don't feel "senior" at all, and I still care about style."
She appreciates relating to models she sees, and enjoys being one women relate to. Powers also finds her work increasing as this new perception takes hold. "But I feel valued for my experience and knowledge as much as my measurements," she says.
