Try Trendy Gloves

Fashion, not just warmth, leads glove looks

52-year-old Ellen Degeneres wore bright blue fingerless gloves on the runway of Richie Rich.

How often does a fashion trend come along that works for all ages, doesn't cost much and looks amazing even on fat days?

It's rare that I sit at a fashion show and crave anything, but I did just that as gloves were burning up the runways. I have plenty of utilitarian gloves – gardening gloves, warm winter gloves, equestrian gloves – but really nothing fun and fashionable (which is the big trend.)

Here are some of the easiest ways to dress up everything from jackets to little black dresses:

Add Patterned Hosiery

Lace, fishnets, stripes update pantyhose

A subtle patterned tight adds texture. These are office-appropriate because they are almost opaque. Lacier styles and fishnets are better for after five.

Last year I had a dressy alumni event to attend and needed to look the part of a fashionista. An over 45 fashionista, that is. So while I tried on dresses with ankle boots and bone-aching platforms, I decided that none of those looks were quite age or occasion appropriate.

So I turned to my stylist friend (I won't drop his clients' names, but I'll give you a hint: his biggest client likes sparkle and plays a guitar.) Wear a simple black dress, patterned black pantyhose and fabulous shoes, he advised.

My jeggings (from Cult of Individuality) were comfy to play with the dogs in (the heels, not so much.) The dog's name is Keyote.

Remember laying down on your bed to squeeze into tight jeans?

Those days of squeezing into skin-tight denim are long gone. But it's not because we aren't still wearing slim-cut jeans (we are!), it's just that technology has given us fabulous denim that can fit like a glove and still feel like you're wearing a comfy knit.

Take, for example, jeggings. These jean/legging hybrids have been trendy in the contemporary arena for several seasons, and are just now trickling down to retailers like Chico's who make clothing for grown-ups.

Ralph Lauren long skirt

When designers like Versace and Dolce & Gabbana – both known for sexy short styles – embrace the longer skirt, you know it's here to stay for a while.

Hemlines have been creeping floor-ward for a while, first with the trendy print maxi dresses for daytime and now with longer skirts for fall.  And this is a trend that looks to continue because the Spring 2011runways from all over the world are full of longer skirt lengths.

All of this is great news for us over 40 girls who want to wear skirts, but hate the thought of wearing something too short.

4 Updated Alternatives to the Cardigan

Sweater coats, vests and more

Chico's long sweater coat is a great alternative to a traditional, button-front cardigan

I am officially over the cardigan.

A few weeks ago, on a particularly chilly day, I tried on dozens of cashmere cardigans and decided that I hated them all.

For starters, the traditional button-front cardigan doesn't go with anything I wear anymore. It's too short to look right over tunics, the sleeves are too slim to accommodate some of the fuller sleeve styles and well, it's a little boring to be quite honest.

Michael Kors mixes a menswear tailored top coat with a pretty wrap blouse for a modern effect.

Menswear — blazers, oxfords, menswear prints (houndstooth, pinstripes), basic white shirts, fedoras, fitted vests and pantsuits – is one of the biggest trends for fall. The beauty of this trend is how easy it is for us grown-ups to co-opt.

My own nod to menswear this Fashion Week was in a pair of high-heeled suede oxfords that I paired with black slim cropped pants and a leopard-print sweater cardigan.
