You never know what is going to ignite the imagination of a child: My very stylish teacher Mrs. Crabtree imparted a subliminal triumvirate of empowerment, perspective and inspiration.

My fourth grade class was kind of like the Little Rascals, or The Goops by Gillette Burgess. We got that way, I posit, because we had a mean, angry teacher who had no control and hit us with rulers.

How to Put More 'You' Into Your Look

Add personal touches for a unique look

I like cowboy boots to put more "me" into my outfits (but, no, those aren't my legs or boots.)

Last week, while hordes of shoppers descended on the malls, my 16-year-old niece talked me into taking her to Goodwill so she could stock up on "granny sweaters." While Kim's book is mostly about navigating the style waters of middle age and beyond, the idea of finding a style mentor is solid for any woman. Kim says in "What to Wear for the Rest of Your Life";

Who are Style Mentors? They are women we notice. Whatever their shape, height, weight, or age, they wear their style like a second skin.

Why I Love Uniform Dressing

It's effortless, frugal, fun

Back in the early '80s, I'd go with the family down to Mexico and buy these great embroidered Mexican dresses and wear them all summer. Five days of summer camp, 5 Mexican dresses. It was my earliest foray into uniform dressing — where you pick a certain look and wear it on a regular basis — and I loved it.

I've done uniform dressing – off and on — for most of my adult life. In college my uniform was ripped up sweats a la Flashdance.  When I was a buyer, it was the black pantsuit. As a work-from-home mom, it was tees and jeans.
