Ancient Greek goddesses aside, it's often celebrities that we look to for beauty cues and clues. Herewith, a nascent exploration of some of the women who inspire us with their particular beauty stamp.

Another reason for this article was a beauty teleseminar I attended in late August, where we were all discussing what beauty really was to us. Which is when I brought up the question of the beauty muse. And it gave the women pause. A lot of names got bandied about but several kept coming up.

Michelle Pfeiffer has the kind of beauty you admire without hating her for it, for some reason. Although I do hear more and more, 'I want to know who did her work!' She admits she has thin hair but finds ways to make it work, manages to stay thin at 52, and has a sweetness and elegance as the basis for her beauty which seems attainable rather than off-putting.
